+/- Circuit information

Barcelona - Cataluna
10 May 2015

On 28 October 1951 the first Formula 1 race in Spain was held on the street circuit of Pedraldes, a suburb of Barcelona. The 70-lap Grand Prix was won by Juan Manuel Fangio. Since 1968, there have been Grand Prix of Spain almost without interruption, alternating between the circuit of Jarama and the famous Montjuïc circuit in Barcelona.

In 1975, Jochen Mass won a highly tragic Grand Prix edition in Montjuïc as the race was broken off after 29 laps due to an accident involving Rolf Stommelen and killing 5 spectators. This was the last race on this circuit. The circuit of Jarama became the sole venue for the Spanish Grand Prix from 1976 to 1982, after which the circuit van Jerez was used until 1991.
When the Circuit de Cataluna opened its doors in 1991, the much-coveted Grand Prix finally returned to Barcelona, where it has been ever since.
